Local Action Strategies
In Oct. 2002, the U.S.
Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF)
adopted a resolution which calls for the development of
three-year Local Action Strategies (LAS) by each of the
seven member U.S. states, territories and commonwealths.
These LAS's are roadmaps, which identify and implement
priority actions needed to reduce key threats to valuable
coral reef resources.
The USCRTF prioritized six threat areas as the focus
for LAS development:
- Over-fishing;
- Land-based sources of pollution;
- Recreational overuse and misuse;
- Lack of public awareness;
- Climate change and coral bleaching; and
- Disease.
Florida,
Hawaii, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa,
Puerto Rico, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana
Islands created specific Local Action Strategies for select
locally relevant threats, using the six priority focus
areas as a guide. Some areas have developed a LAS for
priorities outside of the initial six areas. Each LAS
provides a list of priority projects that need to implemented
to address each treat.
The point
of contact, LAS fact sheets are provided below. They
contain
an overview projects designed for implementation over
a three-year period. Proposals submited that target activities
listed in a LAS need to coordinated with the state/territory
government. For more information on LAS activities
