Office of the Associate Director

The Office of the Associate Director advises the NIEHS Director and the NIEHS senior leadership team on a wide range of program and management issues, including trans-NIH efforts, strategic partnerships and advocacy.  Sharon Hemond Hrynkow, Ph.D., began serving as NIEHS Associate Director on October, 15, 2007. Dr. Hrynkow is focusing on management issues of priority to the NIEHS Acting Director; building and strengthening internal and external NIEHS partnerships in strategic areas, including environmental health research related to global warming, and to gender issues; and enhancing outreach and advocacy efforts to external partner agencies.  The Office of the Associate Director is located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md, where Dr. Hrynkow can serve as a visible presence representing the mission of the NIEHS to other NIH Institutes and to other federal agencies and communities in the DC metropolitan area.

Dr. Hrynkow received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Connecticut and her B.A. in Biology from Rhode Island College. She conducted post-doctoral studies in the field of developmental neurobiology at the University of Oslo, Norway before joining the U.S. Department of State as a Science Officer in 1992. Hrynkow has been at NIH since 1995. Between 2004 and 2006, Hrynkow served as Acting Director of the NIH Fogarty International Center (FIC) and as the FIC Deputy Director from 2000-2006. In 2007, she served as Senior Advisor, United Nations Foundation where she focused primarily on climate change, energy and health issues.
