Whether it is working on a cure for cancer, designing advanced avionics, or writing procurement contracts worth millions of dollars, the challenge is there for individuals with the right skills, motivation and attitude.

THE FEDERAL JOB SEARCH A Three-Step Process
Although the actual job search is your responsibility, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has developed the USAJOBS Federal Employment Information System to assist you along the way. The Federal Employment Information System brings you up-to-date, comprehensive employment information by telephone or computer. Use one of the following self-service methods to obtain listings of the latest Federal job opportunities as well as State, local and private listings. You can also use the System to obtain information on a wide variety of Federal employment-related topics and programs, application packages, and forms. Employment information can be obtained in text format for the visually impaired from the USAJOBS world-wide-web site. SPECIAL APPOINTING AUTHORITIES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
The Federal Government has a special appointing authority for people with disabilities. Federal hiring officials are authorized to use this hiring authority when considering people with disabilities (specifically those who have a severe physical disability, mental retardation, or psychiatric disability). The use of this authority is not mandatory. It is designed to remove barriers and increase employment opportunities for these individuals.

If you are interested in being considered, you must first obtain proof of the disability, and a certification of job readiness (that describes your ability to perform the essential duties of the position in which you are interested) from either:

--a licensed medical professional (e.g., a physician or other medical professional certified by a State, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory to practice medicine);

--a licensed vocational rehabilitation specialist (i.e., State or private); OR

--any Federal agency, State agency, or agency of the District of Columbia or a U.S. territory that issues or provides disability benefits.

The proof of disability and certification of job readiness may come from the same entity listed above.

Then, once you have obtained a proof of disability and a certification of job readiness, you should contact the Federal agency where you wish to work. Ask for the contact person that handles the Selective Placement or Disability Employment Program or visit www.opm.gov/disability for a listing of the coordinators. These agency representatives work closely with qualified people with disabilities and hiring officials with jobs. They help match applicant core skills along with applicant/employee reasonable accommodation needs with available jobs.

DISABLED VETERANS AND OTHER VETERAN OPPORTUNITIES
Any disabled veteran can contact the Department of Veterans Affairs, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Offices, for information on veterans� benefits and related employment services. Certain veterans may also be considered under special hiring programs for disabled veterans with disability ratings of 30% or more, or Veterans� Recruitment Appointment opportunities.

REASONABLE WORKPLACE ACCOMMODATIONS
Sometimes it may be necessary or advisable for Federal hiring officials to make "a reasonable workplace accommodation," if requested, in either the duties of the job, or where and how job tasks are performed.

The Department of Defense (DoD) established Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) to eliminate employment barriers for employees with disabilities. CAP serves as the Federal Government�s centrally funded program to provide assistive technology and services free of charge to Federal agencies that have a partnership agreement with CAP. CAP provides accommodations to individuals who are blind, have low vision, are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a dexterity, communication, cognitive, or learning disability.

Examples of workplace reasonable accommodation include:

  • Providing interpreters, readers, or other personal assistance.
  • Modifying job duties.
  • Restructuring work sites.
  • Providing flexible work schedules or work sites.
  • Obtaining accessible technology or other workplace adaptive equipment.

Such forms of accommodation make it easier to successfully perform the duties of the position. CAP supports Federal employees throughout the employment lifecycle, including recruitment, placement, promotion, and retention of people with disabilities. In an effort to make the Federal government a model employer for people with disabilities, it is important that you contact CAP to work together to provide real solutions for real needs.

To Print your browser File:

Most web browsers support an option to print the document that is displayed on the screen. Simply choose the option to print the document (usually located under the file option) and then choose the option to print. How the document prints is dependent on the printer you are using.

If you are on a local area network (LAN) then you may need to select a printer before you can print. An option to do this is normally available in the same area that you choose to print a document.

You will also need to make sure that the printer is powered on, is on-line, and has paper available.

The Adobe Acrobat reader is a freeware product available from Adobe at http://access.adobe.com. There are versions of the Adobe Acrobat reader for several computer platforms. Click here http://access.adobe.com/ to connect to the Adobe Acrobat site. Once there you can obtain the reader for your computer platform. Follow the instructions on the Adobe site to install the reader on your system. Once you have installed the reader you can view or print files that end in .PDF.

Some browsers will allow you to configure a "helper" application that will load the Adobe Acrobat reader whenever you click on a file that ends in .PDF. Please refer to the instructions that came with your web browser on how to set up or install a "helper" application. The Adobe site also contains instructions on how to do this.

The Windows file manager will also allow you to specify an association so that whenever Windows needs to display a file that ends in .PDF it will load the Adobe Acrobat reader.
