PPPL Science Bowl Coordinator James Morgan said, "It was an exciting day. It's nice to see student teams vying in a science competition with the same enthusiasm as those who participate in high school sporting events."

U.S. Representative Rush Holt, who represents New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, welcomed the participants at the start of the bowl. Congressman Holt is a former Assistant Director of PPPL. The High Technology High School team from Lincroft, NJ, and the Millburn High School team placed second and third, respectively. Other schools participating included Carteret High School, Cherry Hill High School West, Christian Brothers Academy (Lincroft, NJ), Governor Livingston High School (Berkeley Heights, NJ), Hamilton High-East, Hopewell Valley Central High School (Pennington, NJ), Montgomery High School, Neshaminy High School (Neshaminy, PA), Notre Dame High School (Lawrenceville, NJ), Princeton Day School, Princeton High School, Stuart Country Day School (Princeton, NJ), Watchung Hills Regional High School (Warren, NJ), Westfield High School, West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North and South, and Woodbridge High School.

The top winner of the regional competition is receiving an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Eleventh Annual National Science Bowl®, scheduled to begin May 4, 2001.

The regional competition was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and hosted by PPPL. Each team was made up of four students, a student alternate, and a teacher who served as an advisor and coach. The students answered multiple-choice or short-answer questions in biology; chemistry; physics; astronomy; mathematics; and general, earth, and computer sciences.

PPPL, funded by the DOE and managed by Princeton University, is a collaborative national center for science and innovation leading to an attractive fusion energy source.
