Introduction
Salivary gland dysfunction (xerostomia) is a common disorder. It is estimated that about 20% of the general population suffer from xerostomia. Many diseases and conditions can induce salivary gland dysfunction, such as Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer radiotherapy, viral infections, and aging. While the effective conventional therapy of salivary gland dysfunction is still lacking, alternative approaches have shown great perspective in managing this disorder.
This conference is jointly sponsored by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the Office of Rare Diseases, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH), and the Office for Women's Health, Department of Health and Human Services and the Laclede, Inc. The major goals of this conference are to review the state of science in treatment of xerostomia with alternative approaches, to create opportunities for research collaborations and interactions among the participants, and to discuss the future directions and initiatives for basic research and clinical studies in the field.

Purpose of the Conference
The purposes of the conference are:
To bring together the scientists with an interest in basic and clinical research on treatment of salivary gland dysfunction with alternative approaches in order to exchange information and ideas.
To enhance interest in elucidating the mechanisms of alternative approaches as prevention and treatment measures.
To create opportunities for research collaborations and interactions among the participants.
To discuss the future directions and initiatives for basic research and clinical studies in the field of treatment of salivary gland disorders with alternative approaches.
