One pet adopted every 2 ½ minutes at Super Pet Adopt-a-thon

139 dogs and cats get new forever homes

Dozens of families opened their hearts and homes to adopt 139 homeless pets at the Super Pet Adopt-a-thon hosted Saturday, June 21st by the King County Animal Shelter in Kent.

Excited pet seekers formed a long line even before the doors opened hoping for the best chance at the animals from 15 animal shelters and rescue organizations from across Washington.

Pet lovers also had a chance to meet all their animal needs in one place with dog trainers, pet stores and other animal-related vendors set up on the grounds of the shelter.

Besides the numerous adoptions at the event, King County Animal Care and Control volunteers organized hourly raffle drawings and a silent auction which raised $1,172 for the shelter’s Angel Fund. The fund provides veterinary care for abused, sick and injured animals at the county shelter or in foster care.

This year’s event matched more animals with loving owners than in years past and 70 of the 139 animals adopted on Saturday came directly from King County shelters. However King County Animal Care and Control’s facilities in Kent and Bellevue still have a number of animals in need of adoption.

“Although the event was a huge success, we still have cats, dogs and even rabbits ready to join a new loving family,“ said Animal Care and Control Acting Manager Al Dams. “Summer is a tough season for most animal shelters and rescue organizations because animal populations increase dramatically. This event was a great start, but we need every responsible adult who may be thinking about getting a new pet to adopt from a shelter first.”
