There are a few special places in our nation where people can see, experience, and understand the sweep of American history. The Presidio is one such place. Guarding the Golden Gate since our nation began, the Presidio of San Francisco is a national jewel and a local treasure.
Now a new and exciting chapter has begun. The Presidio Trust is presenting to the public an array of proposals to return the Main Post – the heart of the park – to its former vitality.
The Main Post is the birthplace of San Francisco, where the original Spanish garrison was established in 1776. With more than 100 buildings, it is a small town center that complements the park’s forest, trails, and wild open spaces.
Proposals are being considered that would renew the Main Post as the heart of a national park, reveal its history to visitors, and create a home for art and culture. Projects include a heritage and archaeology center, a park lodge, and a new building to house a renowned collection of contemporary art, among others (view summary brochure). Here’s how you can get involved:
- Check out the proposals at a glance, or view the documents.
- Tell us how you would like to see the Main Post welcome the public by sending in a comment letter or offering comments at an October 14 public hearing.
- Attend a public workshop in September or October.
