National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Your Environment is Your Health
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is the
organization within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that studies
the effects of our environment on human health. NIEHS researchers and grantees study environmentally caused health problems from A to Z, such as the deadly effects of asbestos exposure, the developmental impairment of children exposed to lead, and the health effects of urban pollution.
NIEHS is located in the middle of a triangle formed by the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill called Research Triangle Park. Each of those cities is the home for a major University that attracts scientists and students from all over the world. By working with the local Universities and with organizations throughout the world, we are able to share our knowledge and efforts. One of the things that NIEHS employees enjoy the most is our wonderful work "environment." We are located next to a beautiful lake surrounded by natural woods filled with all kinds of wildlife, including beaver, deer, and Canadian geese.
The majority of students come to work full time during
the summer through the Summers of Discovery Program. This
educational program is aimed at bringing in students from
high school through graduate school to learn more about
careers in biological science and research while giving
them an opportunity to make a real contribution to the
field. Applications are accepted for this program from
January 1 through March 1 each year. For more information,
please visit our website:
http://dir.niehs.nih.gov/dirover/summer.htm.
There are also part-time positions available
throughout the year for students majoring in various
biological and/or physical sciences. Although student
positions are filled throughout the year, the majority of
placements are at the beginning of the semester.
Applications are accepted for student vacancies on a
continuous basis. For more information about student
hiring programs, please go to the following website:
http://www.niehs.nih.gov/omhrmb/procedur/summerhire.htm.
Students are typically hired as Biological Laboratory Technicians at the GS-1 through 4 pay levels ($7.35 to $17.16 per hour).
