In a region renowned for towering trees, soaring mountains, deep gorges and expansive wilderness, Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area (LARO) can rightfully claim a place among the Pacific Northwest's outstanding resources. As the largest lake in the area, Lake Roosevelt is ideal for motor boating, water-skiing, sailing, and fishing. In the surrounding sagebrush hills and forested mountains, visitors can camp, picnic, hike, hunt and sightsee.

Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, in Coulee Dam, WA, encompasses the non-reservation portion of Lake Roosevelt, a 130 mile long reservoir created by the Grand Coulee Dam. Lake Roosevelt is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and two American Indian tribes (Colville Confederated Tribes and Spokane Tribe of Indians).

LARO facilities include 28 lakeside campgrounds and 23 boat launching sites. The park encompasses such historical sites as Fort Spokane, one of the last frontier forts built in the West. Living history demonstrations at Fort Spokane recall the late 1800s when soldiers were stationed at the U.S. military outpost. Costumed interpreters demonstrate black powder weapons and military drills used during the operation of Fort Spokane. Another historic site is St. Paul's Mission, in the Kettle Falls area, where missionaries held worship services for the Indians. This Catholic chapel is one of the oldest churches in Washington State. A trail with exhibits is nearby.

Park Rangers are needed as interpreters, to work in visitor protection and to lead guided walks, canoe programs, evening and campfire presentations and special programs for children including Junior Ranger programs.
