What is the Immigration & Naturalization Service?

The mission of the Immigration & Naturalization Service, an agency of the Department of Justice, is to carry out our country's immigration laws, which provide for selective immigration and controlled entry of visitors, business traveler's or non-immigrant aliens.

Specific tasks include: facilitation of entry of persons legally admissible at the various land, sea and air ports of entry; administration of benefits including permanent residents status or naturalization; apprehension and removal of those aliens who enter illegally or who violate the requirements of their stay. INS policy highlights "social service" responsibilities, as well as the duty to enforce the law as established by Congress.

INS offers two student employment programs: Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and Student Volunteer Experience Program (SVEP). Students who apply, must be a U.S. citizen, at least 16 years of age, and be enrolled in school in accordance with the regulations of the programs.

SCEP provides for the integration of student's academic studies and Federal work experience with the potential of non-competitive competition into the Federal career service. SCEP offers the following benefits: annual and sick leave, life insurance, health benefits, paid salary, and a workweek of 16 hours (minimum) to 24 hours or more with the approval of their supervisor.

SVEP provides interested students with the opportunity to obtain educationally related and meaningful work experience. Students in the SVEP program are not compensated for worked performed; however, SVEP does offer the following benefits: Students may work up to 40 hours a week, and their work experience may earn credits towards a degree. Additionally, they may receive volunteer or community service hours.

Job Opportunities

Listed below are some of the job opportunities that are offered to both the SCEP and SVEP students. Students in the SCEP must be pursuing a degree that correlates to the Service needs.

Adjudications: Process applications for various immigration benefits.

Detention Removal: Monitor and control immigrants through removal proceedings, as well as non-detained cases.

Immigration Inspectors: Serve as ambassadors tasked with the responsibility of greeting and processing the large number of visitors, lawful permanent residents, and United States citizens at ports of entry.

Investigations: Focus on the identification and removal of incarcerated criminal aliens, identifying, arresting, prosecuting and dismantling criminal organizations that traffic in human cargo and obtain immigration benefits and documents illegally.

Management: Train employees; upgrade skills; fund official travel; purchase the tools to do the job and provide employee benefits.
