How to Apply for NIST, Department of Commerce, and Other Federal Job Vacancies

Search for Job Vacancies:  Vacancy announcements contain important information that applicants need to know to apply for a specific job opening including the duties and responsibilities of the position; minimum qualification requirements; knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the position; and general application procedures.  The following links and information are provided to assist you in your job search:

To Search for a Job:  Click on the tab "Search Jobs" in the red box OR click the arrow next to the words SEARCH JOBS in the center of the screen.

The following methods are available to search. Just click on the tab you would like to search by:

  • Basic
  • Agency
  • Series
  • Advanced

Any of the above search criteria can be further refined by location, salary range, or applicant eligibility.  BE SURE you answer the applicant eligibility question correctly!  Status jobs will be eliminated if you do not correctly change the default answer to let the system know you are eligible to view status vacancies.

To Create a Resume:  Click on the MY USAJOBS tab.  Required information is marked with a red asterisk.  You may cut and paste.  Throughout the resume builder process, if you move forward and required data has not been provided, you will receive an error message.  You may stop the process by clicking "SAVE FOR LATER."

  • Click "Create your account now!" button Name/Address/Email/Account ID & Password/Citizenship/Veterans Preference
  • You receive message:  Congratulations, your account has been created!  To continue, click the button on the top that reads "RESUME"
  • Next, click the button, "Create a New Resume"
  • Personal information is transferred to the first step in the resume builder section.
    • First, "Name Your Resume"
    • Enter your SSN and phone numbers, and,
    • If you are a federal employee, change the default answer to "YES," enter the information requested, and click "NEXT"
  • Experience Section - Includes:
    • Education and Job Related Information
    • Follow prompts to enter information.
  • Related Information Section - Includes:
    • References
    • Language Skills
    • Affiliations
    • Professional Publications
    • Additional Information (ie., awards, honors, skills)
    • Availability (work duration and work schedule)
    • Desired Locations
  • Finishing Up
    • Spell Check
    • Make Searchable
    • Save for Later

When you have completed the above steps, you will be returned to the home page.  Here you have access to establish Agents and obtain Applications status.

Applicant Supply File (ASF) Information: 

NIST collects applications or resumes for future job openings in a range of occupational areas.  Applications are maintained in an automated Applicant Supply File (ASF) system for a period of 90 days.  Applicants are considered when filling a Direct Hire request.  Click here to read some frequently asked questions about the ASF.

All applicants are eligible to apply (including NIST and Department of Commerce employees).  Applicants may apply at https://rproxy.nist.gov/asf or through the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM's) USAjobs website at http://www.usajobs.opm.gov.  An applicant may apply for multiple series and paybands with one application.  To view the Applicant Supply File bulletin for either Gaithersburg or Boulder, click on one of the following links :
