Technology Deployment

The Federal Lands Highway (FLH) Technology Deployment (TD) Program promotes the evaluation and deployment of applied research and technology that is focused on improving the quality and efficiency of the transportation community. It promotes technology transfer and sharing of innovations, best practices, and related knowledge between Federal Land Management agencies, Tribal governments, State and local transportation communities, and the FHWA Resource Centers. The goals of the program are accomplished through engaging our partners and peers to play an active role in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new highway technologies, through field testing, showcasing, engineering assistance, and sharing and documenting the results with the transportation community.

VISION: To make the Federal Lands Highway Technology Deployment Program a premier national and international model for implementing sound and beneficial technology.

GOAL: To make the Federal Lands Highway program a center for technical expertise and a show place for evaluating, developing, and implementing leading edge technology.

The FLH TD program is coordinated between the three Federal Lands Highway Divisions (FLHD) located in Vancouver, WA (Western); Denver, CO (Central); and Sterling, VA (Eastern). In addition, the FLH TD Coordinators will work closely with the FLH Functional Discipline Leaders (FDLs) to identify and select key initiatives.

The FLH TD program has identified six focus areas:

  • GIS/DV: Geographic Information Systems / Design Visualization
  • CSD/CSS: Context Sensitive Design / Context Sensitive Solutions
  • NDE: Non-Destructive Evaluations
  • HPM: High Performance Materials
  • GS: Geosynthetics Systems
  • AC: Accelerated Construction

The Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFLHD) TD Team identifies and promotes NIEU (New, Innovative, Emerging, and Underutilized) technologies to help us in our business of building roads and bridges. Our goal is geared toward deployment rather than research of NIEU technologies recognizing materials and methodologies impacting transportation planning, project development, and construction practices.
