USGS Scientist Recognized by the Food and Drug Administration

USGS research scientist William H. Gingerich was presented the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner’s Special Citation at the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) 2007 Honors Awards Ceremony on June 11, 2007 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The prestigious award recognizes Dr. Gingerich “For exceptional leadership, outstanding coordination of resources, and sustained efforts in the development of data for the approval of new animal drugs for aquaculture.” Over the past 14 years, Dr. Gingerich has lead a team of scientists and support staff at the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) to develop urgently needed safe and efficacious medicinal drugs for public and private U.S. aquaculture. Three medicinal drugs and eight label claims were recently approved by CVM as a result of the team’s broad based collaborations with the National Coordinator for Aquaculture New Animal Drug Applications, other federal agencies in the Departments of Agriculture and Interior, the Food and Drug Administration’s CVM, pharmaceutical and chemical company sponsors, and aquaculture interests. Of special interest, UMESC developed all the data for the original approval for three label claims for 35% PEROX-AID® (hydrogen peroxide). It is anticipated that an additional number of new oral and waterborne medicinal products will also be approved for U.S. aquaculture in the next several years because of these partnerships.
