City of Philadelphia

Internship Program

The 2008 Mayor's Internship Program (MIP) consists of four components:

  • Internship
  • Group Project
  • Friday Brown Bag Speaker Series
  • Outside Activities

Internship

The focus of MIP is to give students who are interested in public service the ability to learn and contribute in a city government that runs the nation's 5th largest municipality. Mayor's Interns are assigned projects providing research, administrative, and staff assistance to high-level City managers. Through their work, interns experience the rich diversity the City of Philadelphia has to offer. MIP also enables students to learn about careers in government and to help them develop tangible skills for the workplace while increasing awareness about government roles and responsibilities. The Mayor's Internship Program is a non-paying internship, requiring a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week, with interns serving in their support roles for 8 weeks during the summer. Wherever possible, the City cooperates with programs under which students may earn academic credit.

Group Project

In the past, Mayor's Interns have undertaken a student-driven group project focused on some segment of city government. The purpose of the project is to give interns the real world experience that City Managers face when identifying an issue and/or concern in the City of Philadelphia, then often working with a diverse group of individuals to develop a viable solution that satisfies all stakeholders. The completed project is presented to the Mayor at the end of the program. An example of a Mayor's Internship Program group project is the Benjamin Franklin Parkway Presentation.

Friday Brown Bag Speaker series

The Mayor's Internship Program hosts a weekly Brown Bag Speakers Series for all interns, held each Friday, from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, in the Mayor's Reception Room, Room 202 City Hall. Students are invited to bring their lunches and hear speakers who have included: the Mayor, the Managing Director, department commissioners, and other high-level City staff. Presentation topics range from city planning to discussion on career paths. The purpose is to provide interns with an opportunity to interact with high level city officials in a more intimate setting.

Outside Activities

In an effort to offer the Mayor's Internship Program interns a broader view of the City of Philadelphia and build collegiality among participants, activities outside of work are planned. Past activities have included, but are not exclusive to:

  • Philadelphia Phillies games

  • Touring the Philadelphia Police Academy

  • The Philadelphia Fire Academy
