    On December 17, 2004, President Bush established by Executive Order a Cabinet-level “Committee on Ocean Policy” to coordinate the activities of executive branch departments and agencies regarding ocean-related matters in an integrated and effective manner to advance the environmental and economic interests of present and future generations of Americans.
     
  • Environmental Protection Agency
    The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to protect public health and to safeguard and improve the natural environment - air, water, and land - upon which human life depends.

  • National Biological Service
    Now known as the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, its mission is to work with others to provide the scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of our Nation's biological resources.

  • United States Fish and Wildlife Service
    Part of the Department of the Interior, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conserves, protects and enhances fish and wildlife and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

  • Agricultural Research Service - National Programs
    A strong research and technology development program for U.S. aquaculture, led by the Agricultural Research Service, would offer significant benefits to both producers and consumers by enhancing the production efficiency, profitability, and quality of aquaculture products and systems.

Nonprofit Organizations

  • Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay
    The mission of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is to build, to maintain, and to serve the partnership among the general public, the private sector, and government that is essential for establishing and sustaining policy, programs and the political will to preserve and restore the resources of the Chesapeake Bay.

  • American Fisheries Society
    Oldest and largest professional society representing fisheries scientists. Promotes scientific research and enlightened management of resources for optimum use and enjoyment by the public. It also encourages a comprehensive education for fisheries scientists and continuing on-the-job training.

  • Institute for Fisheries Resources
    Dedicated to the study, protection and enhancement of both marine and anadromous biological resources on the Pacific coast of the United States and Canada. The Institute is independent of but affiliated with the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations - the largest organization of commercial fishermen on the West Coast.

  • American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists
    Established in 1957, the Institute was founded to promote conservation and proper utilization of fishery resources through application of fishery science.

  • Monterey Bay Aquarium

Aquatic Resources Beyond the United States

  • International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)
    Oldest intergovernmental organization in the world concerned with marine and fisheries science. Since its establishment in Copenhagen in 1902, ICES has been a leading scientific forum for the exchange of information and ideas on the sea and its living resources, and for the promotion and coordination of marine research by scientists within its member countries.
