Western Forest Insects
2007 Revision

"Western Forest Insects" by R.L. Furniss and V.M. Carolin was published in 1977, and is considered by many to be the single most important western forest insect reference. It was reprinted in the 90's, but has not been revised since it was issued. For a number of years, forest entomologists, from all walks of the profession in the West, have encouraged/requested that the book be revised and updated. This revision will be done simultaneously with the revision of its companion "Eastern Forest Insects". The intent is that both books will be similar in content and format. Revising and updating will include such things as new information on insects, changes in scientific and common names, and new insects. We anticipate that there will be both hard copy and electronic versions of the books. Iral Ragenovich, entomologist with the UDSA Forest Service, will be spearheading the endeavor for "Western Forest Insects"; however, success and a timely completion of this project will depend on the assistance, and knowledge, of all forest entomologists throughout the West. Any assistance, whether with one insect, or a group of insects, will be accepted. The text version of the original "Western Forest Insects" book is posted below and will provide the basis for the revision.

For more information, or if you are interested in being part of this important legacy for the next generation of forest entomologists, contact Iral Ragenovich via e-mail (iragenovich@fs.fed.us) or phone (503-808-2915).
