Department Overview

The Department carries out its mission by providing vocational rehabilitation and other vital services that provide access and independence to eligible Californians with disabilities.

DOR works with individuals of every type and category of disability. Rehabilitation counselors in the many DOR field offices work directly with the consumers.

The proposed annual budget for FY 2008/2009 is about $392.9 million. There are about 1,970 authorized staff positions statewide, and approximately 120,000 consumers received services from DOR in the 2007/2008 fiscal year.

The Department of Rehabilitation was established on October 1, 1963 in accordance with Chapter 1747, Statutes of 1963. The Department is part of the Health and Human Services Agency. The functions and responsibilities of the Department are contained in Sections 19000 - 19856 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code.
