U.S.Embassy Kigali staff visit Gihembe Refugee Camp

| On August 17, 2009, two U.S. Embassy employees Political Officer, Jennifer Foltz and Political FSN Festus Bizimana visited the Gihembe Refugee Camp. Gihembe is one of the camps that recently received U.S. Government funding. In October, 2008, Gihembe, Nyabiheke and Kiziba benefited from a project implemented by the American Refugee Committee that built Solar Bread Baking stoves with support from the Ambassador’s Refugee Fund.
Gihembe Refugee Camp is located on a hill near Byumba, about 58km from Kigali. It was established in 1997 to host Congolese refugees who had fled the fighting in the DRC.

There are currently about 20,000 refugees in the camp, which is supported by UNHCR and the Government of Rwanda.

Center and Kibagabaga Hospital Aug. 5. | American journalist and media consultant Rachel Jones conducted a five day media workshop on health reporting for 22 Rwandan journalists and media professionals in Kigali from August 3 – 7.
The workshop covered various topics including The Basics of Reporting, Exploring a Theme, and How to Plan for a Successful Story among others and the participants took part in a field trip to an HIV/AIDS program site providing Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT). |
Karen Kramer speaking to participants | On July 6 and 7, 2009, the Public Affairs Office of the United States of America in Kigali hosted a two-day documentary film workshop that was held in collaboration with the Rwanda Cinema Center. The workshop targeted 30 emerging filmmakers from Rwanda

Danny Glover Visits Rwanda
Danny Glover and President Paul Kagame in Village Urugwiro | On June 28, 2009 Danny Glover came to Rwanda to take part in the closing night event of the 5th annual Rwanda Film Festival, a U.S. Embassy sponsored showing of an American produced documentary on water “Flow.” Glover, a great supporter of the Rwanda Film Festival, spent three days in the country and met with President Kagame in his office at Urugwiro village.
Glover is the dean of African American character actors. He was nominated for the Genie award for best performance in a supporting role for Poor Boy’s Game (2007). |
 | Embassy Kigali held its traditional official American Independence Day celebration on July 2. The celebration started with the singing of the American and Rwandan National Anthems. More than 300 guests including Rwandan ministers, foreign ambassadors, and leaders of governmental and non-government organizations came to celebrate U.S. Independence Day with the Americans. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of International Labor Affairs, will award up to USD 18.45 million through 4 or more cooperative agreements to one or more qualifying organizations and/or Associations to combat exploitive child labor in the following 4 countries: Guatemala (up to USD 4.2 million), Indonesia (up to USD 5.5 million), Nepal (up to USD 4.25 million) and Rwanda (up to USD 4.5 million). Interest in travel to America continues to grow, and we expect an extraordinary peak application period this summer. This summer, we recommend that travelers begin the visa application process by scheduling your visa appointment as early as possible.
