After four years of heating more than 20,000 cubic meters of rock to the boiling point of water, scientists at the Yucca Mountain Project turned off the heaters in the drift scale heater test on January 14, 2002.

Transportation of Spent Nuclear Fuel

The following are brief excerpts from videotapes on topics related to transportation of nuclear waste.

The German laboratory BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) conducted a full-scale test on a CASTOR spent nuclear fuel rail cask. The cask was placed next to a rail tank car filled with propane. Fuel oil was then ignited beneath the rail car. The CASTOR cask survived the fire and explosion.
