To those concerned about the health of miners and other workers:

MSHA is pleased to provide for your review a draft the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) publication "Medical Surveillance and Biological Monitoring for Miners Exposed to Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead and Mercury." This toolbox is designed for health care professionals, acting in the scope of their professional license, who may provide expertise to mine operators with their medical surveillance programs. It may also assist other professionals, including those who treat patients who work in the mining industry and have exposure to these metals.

The draft toolbox has been technically reviewed by a medical officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an occupational medicine physician at the Rutgers Medical School, and appropriate staff at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). We welcome your feedback and will use it to enhance this guide before it is published and disseminated. Let us know how we can improve it so it will better serve health care providers and professionals.

Thank you for your interest in helping to keep mine workers healthy.
