MAXIMIZING YOUR OUTREACH EFFORT

Do you have a project, product, or message that you need to tell the world about? But where do you start? What is "marketing" really? This course provides attendees with the marketing basics. The course includes lessons in developing a marketing plan, determining customer needs, getting to know your audience (demographics), determining the appropriate methods to reach them, and how to maximize the success of your program. Learn how to start the project development phase with marketing in mind to enhance your ability to reach your partners and customers and attain positive results.

MEDIA TRAINING LEVEL 1
Course length: 1 day
Description: This all-day highly interactive course is designed to provide participants with basic skills in handling media inquiries and interviews. The course covers agency media policies, message development, how to prepare for and take control of a press interview, how to establish working relationships with reporters, and how to look and sound your best. The course is also helpful for tips on how to improve presentation skills and public speaking. Participants gain hands-on experience through class exercises and videotaped mock interviews and critiques.

MEDIA TRAINING LEVEL 2
Course length: 1 day
Description: A continuation of Media Training Level 1. Participants develop additional skills in reporter relations, crisis communications, and how to plan and execute a successful media campaign. Participants gain hands-on experience through class exercises and videotaped mock interviews in how to prepare for and participate in press conferences, public meetings, and television and radio interview programs.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS IN PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT
Course length: 1 day
Description: This course is designed to help transportation officials develop the communications skills and techniques needed to succeed during the planning and public involvement phases of your projects. You will learn how to anticipate – and even predict – where potential problems may lurk before you ever hold your first formal public hearing. Participants will learn how to integrate a focused communications plan into the overall public involvement effort. You will learn how to prepare for, carry out and conclude the public meeting. Participants will also learn how to give effective presentations and deal with hostile groups and individuals. You’ll gain hands-on experience through a series of course exercises. When you complete this course, you will have the knowledge and confidence you need to communicate more effectively about the transportation problems you and the public are trying to solve.

PRESENTATION SKILLS WORKSHOP
Description: This course teaches participants how to plan, design and deliver effective presentations. The course teaches participants how to get started, such as specifying objectives, analyzing your audience and selecting the proper presentation mediums. The course also teaches how to design the presentation, including determining the message, crafting a story line and building a storyboard. In the final lesson, participants learn how to actually deliver the presentation, including effective delivery skills, using visuals and handling audience questions.
