When disaster strikes a community, 4-H'ers are there to help.

This September 4-7, members, clubs, and families of 4-H are coming together for a community in Greensburg, Kansas, to help raise a 14,000 square-foot barn in just four days. In May 2007, a catastrophic tornado struck Greensburg and wiped out nearly 95 percent of the town, including the Kiowa County 4-H Livestock Pavilion. The barn raising event will bring members of the Greensburg community as well as volunteers from around the country together to rebuild the important 4-H landmark.

Two landmark events kickoff this week, the Indiana State Fair and the Beijing Olympic Games. Are there any commonalities between the athletes and 4-H members headed for State Fair competition? The answer is absolutely yes if you ask 1988 Olympic runner and father of Indiana 4-H'ers, Terry Brohm. The Indiana University athlete was on the grounds of the State Fair Monday and told Hoosier Ag Today what happens during the process of getting to that pinnacle of competition is what links the two.

Teddy Bear Smiles Across America 21 Reads

Texas State News
Texas State News

It all started with a question from a 4-H director: How could Jodilyn Marrs, a 10-year-old 4-H'er from Plantersville, Texas, better her community? Jodilyn's answer was to bring a smile to the elderly members of her community who are often forgotten in retirement homes. What better way to do this than with a teddy bear? Jodilyn collected more than 250 bears, as well as other stuffed animals, and distributed them to 188 retirement home residents on Valentine's Day. This simple idea was a huge success and fun, too. "Some smiled from ear to ear. Some even cried. I felt proud that it was my idea!" Jodilyn said.
