NIH uses this list of codes to categorize the type of Human Subjects involvement within a grant application. The codes can refer to which genders, minorities and children will be included in the application, and whether or not their representation is scientifically acceptable. They appear on the summary statements grantees receive, and also on the grants management and program officer worksheets in IMPAC.

Clinical Trial
(X)* Clinical trial, gender, and minority codes not assigned (for non-clinical research or non-scored applications).
(Y)* NIH-defined phase III clinical trial.
(N)* Clinical research - not an NIH-defined phase III clinical trial.

G1A Includes both genders, scientifically acceptable.
G2A Includes only women, scientifically acceptable.
G3A Includes only men, scientifically acceptable.
