Board Member Hyland and Outreach Task Force Gain Valuable Insight From Credit Union Community During New Orleans Town Hall Meeting

June 7, 2007 - National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board Member Gigi Hyland hosted the third of six scheduled Outreach Task Force Meetings yesterday in New Orleans, LA. The creation of the Outreach Task Force is in further response to the findings in NCUA's Member Service Assessment Pilot Program (MSAP) which was issued in November, 2006. The purpose of the town hall meetings is to gather input and ideas from credit unions, credit union leagues, and other interested parties on the recommendations from the MSAP.

As in previous meetings, Board Member Hyland provided background information to the attendees and assured them that their contributions would be crucial to the deliberations of the Task Force, as it has made no decisions on any of the issues under consideration. The meeting encouraged active participation from the credit union community by assigning attendees to tables for discussion regarding a variety of topics, including: NCUA programs and processes to encourage outreach to underserved communities; value of low-income designation; data collection on member income; and data collection on executive compensation. Due to the proximity of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (NFCDCU) Annual Conference, many officials from small credit unions attended the meeting, which featured an added emphasis on the role of small credit unions and NCUA’s policies regarding this segment of the credit union system. After the discussions, each table recorded their ideas, synthesized their responses, and reported to the entire audience for further discussion.

"With the third town hall meeting being completed, the Outreach Task Force is becoming well equipped with excellent information gained firsthand from the credit union community,” stated Board Member Hyland. “The format of these meetings is ideal for the attendees to share their voice about these important issues and allows NCUA to listen attentively and apply what the agency is hearing. As we conclude with the final three meetings, the Task Force will certainly have quality input to apply to our deliberations.”

The next Outreach Task Force Meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 16, in Los Angeles, CA.. For a complete schedule and to register for future meetings, please visit the NCUA website at: http://www.ncua.gov/TH-Outreach/Index.htm
