Board Member Hyland Encourages
Service to Immigrants

June 9, 2006, Alexandria, VA – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board Member Gigi Hyland delivered the luncheon Keynote address at the 4th Latino Conference during the 32nd Annual Meeting of The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions (NFCDCU) in Durham, NC. In her address, Board Member Hyland celebrated the values and heritage of the credit union system and congratulated small and community development credit unions for serving the underserved and immigrant populations.

During her address, Board Member Hyland expressed her pride in her Latino heritage and the values passed on from her mother, who was native Puerto Rican. Board Member Hyland also emphasized the importance of reaching out and gaining the trust of underserved and immigrant populations.

“America has always been a place of hope and opportunity for immigrants,” said Board Member Hyland. “Credit Unions have proven to be a reliable financial partner for immigrants and I encourage them to continue offering innovative and affordable financial services."

The theme for this year’s conference, ‘Honoring Our Heritage, Focused on the Future,’ was aimed at celebrating the original ideals of the credit union system.

"It is good to reflect on the heritage of credit unions and how cooperative principles can be applied by credit unions in today's dynamic financial marketplace," noted Board Member Hyland.

"At NCUA, I will ensure a risk management regulatory approach instead of a risk aversion approach. As your regulator, I will make every effort to promote a flexible environment which allows small and community development credit unions to continue doing a great job reaching the underserved.”

The National Credit Union Administration is the independent federal agency that charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the savings of nearly 85 million account holders in all federal credit unions and many state-chartered credit unions. NCUA operations are funded by credit unions, not tax dollars.
