Board Member Hyland Participates
in Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to
Celebrate Opening of Community Branch Office

May 9, 2006, Alexandria- National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board Member Gigi Hyland recently participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of a community branch of HEW Federal Credit Union.

The new branch, located in the Penn-Branch shopping center at the intersections of Branch Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast Washington, will serve the needs of the surrounding low to moderate income community by providing a variety of affordable financial services, including: free checking; mortgages; insured savings accounts; auto loans; credit rebuilding, and financial counseling services.

Participating in the ceremony with Board Member Hyland included HEW FCU’s Chairwoman of the Board, Patricia Ellis, as well as Carrie Thornhill, President/CEO of the Marshall Heights Community Development Organization.  Board Member Hyland addressed those attending the event and congratulated the credit union’s staff for undertaking the rehabilitation of the office space and rebuilding it themselves.

“You have accomplished amazing work here in turning this former convenience store into a welcoming branch where community residents can benefit from the credit union’s host of services. As not for profit financial cooperatives, credit unions are consistently helping people from all walks of life and communities to achieve the dream of financial self sufficiency,” noted Board Member Hyland.  “You are helping to make that dream a reality.”

The National Credit Union Administration is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, also operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the deposits of over 85 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the majority of state-chartered credit unions.
