WASHINGTON, D.C. – Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett will address the “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” Friends of the Network to Freedom Association Inaugural Conference on Thursday, September 13, 2007.
Deputy Secretary Scarlett’s remarks will highlight the role of the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service (NPS) in protecting and preserving historic sites associated with the Underground Railroad. NPS’s Network to Freedom Program (NTF) is committed to preserving these sites across the country and has carried the message about the cultural and historical aspect of national parks directly to communities of color and opened the door for public participation in the expansion of the program at a grassroots level. To date, there are 300 listing in the NTF (203 sites, 60 programs, and 37 facilities) in 28 states plus Washington, D.C.
The “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” Friends of the Network to Freedom Association Inaugural Conference runs from Sep. 10 - 15, 2007 and is being hosted by The Underground Railroad Research Institute (UGRRI) of Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY.
