On July 7, 2000, Nancy Nadler appeared before 13 million viewers of the TODAY SHOW to talk about early identification of hearing loss and noise and hearing protection. Nancy heads the League for the Hard of Hearing's Noise Center.
"Stay Back from the Boom to Protect Your Ears" was the title of the USA TODAY July 3, 2000, article on page 5 of the D Section. The author, Anita Manning, urged readers to protect their hearing during July 4 celebrations. Coalition members from the Deafness Research Foundation were quoted as well as NIDCD staff.
Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers (H.E.A.R.) has new public service announcements (PSAs) available for TV and radio. The new PSAs feature George Clinton of PFUNK, DJ Qbert of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz , DJ Pollywog, and others. The PSAs are enjoying heavy rotation on Boston, Austin, and San Francisco TV stations and in 52 other cities nationwide. H.E.A.R. also has new web video PSAs with artists Herbie Hancock, Clayton Cameron (drummer for Tony Bennett), and The Mermen at www.hearnet.com/features/feature_PSA.shtml.
H.E.A.R. also distributed information and earplugs to over 20,000 music lovers at one of the biggest Bay Area concert events of the year, sponsored by LIVE 105 on June 16. H.E.A.R. was also featured on the PBS News Hour web site at www.pbs.org/newshour/extra/features/jan-june00/loudworld.html.

New Reporting Data
Readership for our NAPS "TIPS" piece is reaching its peak. As of June 30, our piece has generated 1,064 newspaper articles in 32 different states, with a readership of 92.7 million readers. Some 67 percent of the placements are from the top 50 markets. A Spanish version of the article will appear in Spanish-language papers this summer.

New Activities
The WISE EARS!® Coordinating Panel met on June 29 to map out future plans for the campaign. Discussions centered on strategies for achieving the Healthy People 2010 goal to reduce noise-induced hearing loss in the public and the worker. Suggestions included broader outreach to State health offices, farmers, vocational students, trade union members, and older Americans. The panel is planning a spring WISE EARS!® Summit to rally coalition members around these issues.

WISE EARS!® to Target Rural Hearing Health
In September 2000, WISE EARS!® plans a media outreach to encourage Americans living in rural areas to protect their hearing when using farm equipment, while hunting, and when engaging in other outdoor activities. The outreach effort coincides with national efforts to encourage people to share the values and fun of the outdoors.
WISE EARS!® NIHL Prevention Materials Available

Today's Supervisor
"Listen Up! Learn How to Protect Your Hearing" is the feature article of the February 2000 issue of Today's Supervisor, a publication distributed by NIOSH and the National Safety Council. The article discusses frequently asked questions about hearing loss, noise control, and choosing hearing protection.
Johns Hopkins Center for Hearing and Balance
For July 4, Johns Hopkins Center for Hearing and Balance sent out flyers on hearing protection to the media and distributed about 700 pairs of earplugs to the public at stations throughout the medical institutions.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has some new materials on noise-induced hearing loss, including a one-page fact sheet on preventing hearing loss and tinnitus, a brochure on noise in the workplace, and a "Pump Down the Volume" poster.
Noise Awareness Day 2001 Set--Mark Your Calendars
The League for the Hard of Hearing will host the next "International Noise Awareness Day" on April 25, 2001. The Noise Center at the League for the Hard of Hearing, announced that their web site is getting 60,000 hits a month. Visit them at www.llh.org.
