WISE EARS!® Officially Launched
The WISE EARS!® campaign was successfully launched July 4th holiday weekend! We have started to receive tracking information:

June 29, United Press International wire service, "Watch Your Ears Over The 4th"

July 3, Baltimore Sun, "Easy-on-the-ears Fourth urged," (Front Page!)

Dr. Battey and Dr. Rosenstock participated in a satellite media tour. Segments were seen in the following markets:

  • Baltimore
  • Detroit
  • Ft. Myers
  • Naples
  • Miami
  • Ft. Lauderdale
  • West Palm Beach, FL
  • Denver
  • Augusta, GA
  • Lubbock, TX
  • Honolulu
  • St. Louis
  • Marquette
  • New York
  • Washington, DC

Many more stations requested the tape. Our current report indicates that the story reached 3.2 million households over the holiday weekend.

"Operation BANG" article sent by coalition member, Lt. Col. John R. Allen, Andrews Air Force Base.

Johns Hopkins produced a terrific poster, "Uncle Sam Wants You ... to protect your hearing over the 4th" and distributed earplugs with the poster.

The National Campaign for Hearing Health, a program of the Deafness Research Foundation, issued a press release on protecting hearing over the July 4th weekend and noted membership in the WISE EARS!® campaign. www.hearinghealth.net.

The director of NIH's Office of Communication distributed WISE EARS!® press packets at "Unity99" in Seattle, a meeting of the minority journalist organizations, African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, and Native American. Participants were very enthusiastic about the materials and the campaign.

The summer 1999 issue of "Inside," the NIDCD Clearinghouse newsletter, featured the WISE EARS!® campaign. "Inside" reaches nearly 4,000 groups and individuals with an interest in hearing and hearing loss.

Three produced radio spots, available on the WISE EARS!® home page, were distributed to stations across the country.

59,000 national employees in the Department of Health and Human Services received the WISE EARS!® message and web site on their end of June pay stubs.

Dr. Carter VanWaes, Acting Clinical Director of the NIDCD recorded an interview for WTOP radio AM & FM, Washington, DC, that was repeated throughout the holiday weekend.

NIH Radio distributed an interview with Dr. James Battey on preventing noise-induced hearing loss over the 4th that received 75 "hits" nationwide.
