Features

 -   HUD CHARGES PUERTO RICO CONDO ASSOCIATION WITH DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION. HUD has charged a Puerto Rico condominium association with violating the Fair Housing Act for repeatedly refusing to grant accessible parking spaces to a couple, both of whom have physical disabilities. Read the charge.

 -   HUD BRINGS DISCRIMINATION CHARGE FOR MINNESOTA COMPLEX'S EXCLUSION OF SERVICE DOGS. In a charge brought on behalf of Fair Housing of the Dakotas, HUD alleges that the owners and managers of a 24-unit complex outside Fargo, ND, violated the Fair Housing Act by discouraging applications from persons with a common breed of service dog. The charge alleges that an agent of the property told a bona fide applicant and a person posing as an applicant they could not reside at the complex with a 37-pound Labrador mix which each said assisted them with a disability. Read the charge.

 -   HUD CHARGES MANAGEMENT AND TWO MANAGEMENT AGENTS OF AN APARTMENT COMPLEX WITH VIOLATIONS OF THE FAIR HOUSING ACT. HUD has charged the management and two management agents of West Side Homes located in Oswego, Kansas with violations of the Fair Housing Act. The two management agents made discriminatory statements against families with children, and discouraged a single mother with disability from applying for an accessible apartment. West Side Homes’ management agents repeatedly told the mother that West Side Homes was a senior housing complex, which it was not, and did not allow families with children to live there.
Read the charge.

 -   PUERTO RICO CONDO ASSOCIATION MUST PAY $17,000 FOR DENIAL OF ACCESSIBLE PARKING SPACE. An administrative law judge has ordered a Puerto Rico condominium association to pay $17,000 to a family denied a parking space necessary to accommodate a son’s disability. Under the consent order, all persons active in the management of the condominium association also agree to attend fair housing training and submit to HUD a reasonable-accommodation policy within 30 days. In February, HUD charged the association with violating the Fair Housing Act for refusing to assign the family a parking space which would allow easy transfer of the son from his wheelchair into and out of the family minivan. Read the Consent Order.
