Cartoon clipartFellowships are grants awarded to individual researchers for developing independent research projects while completing training that will advance their careers.

NIAID offers fellowships at the predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior levels. Grant duration varies; read the program announcement for details.

Investigators must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents with a valid Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-551) at the time of award. People on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

We support the following fellowship grants:

  • NRSA Senior Fellowships (F33) -- You must have at least seven years of research experience after your doctoral degree, and your proposed research must expand your experience and offer career benefits. F33s typically support faculty sabbaticals. This award is not intended for people who have been postdocs for several years.

Note on effort requirement: Fellowships require full-time effort, 12 person months a year.
