Dr. Michael A. Candreva, a Commander in the United States Public Health Service, is the Chief Clinical Consultant in Optometry for the Indian Health Service.  He began practice in the Northern Plains after completing a Hospital-Based Public Health Residency Program at Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, NM.  For the past ten years, Dr. Candreva has been a practicing optometrist at the Standing Rock Indian Hospital in Fort Yates, North Dakota.  During his time there he developed and established an accredited Hospital-Based Optometry Residency Program.  In this capacity, Dr. Candreva increased access to quality eye care for those residing on the Standing Rock Reservation.

As Clinical Adjunct Faculty at Southern California College of Optometry, Dr. Candreva was able to provide residents and interns with a well-rounded clinical and didactic education.  In conjunction with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Diabetes Program he manages a diabetic retinopathy prevention program, which assists in the provision of spectacles for diabetic patients.  As Dr. Candreva continues his career in the IHS, he looks forward to recruiting and retaining qualified eye care providers who share the common goal of providing comprehensive and culturally acceptable public health services to American Indian and Alaskan Native people.
