BEST PRACTICES   ::   RESOURCES

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects 14-15 million people in the United States. People with asthma have almost half a million hospitalizations annually, and 5000 die each year of the disease. There is a wide gap between current knowledge about asthma and actual clinical practice. To close this gap, work needs to be done in several areas - assessing and monitoring severity of asthma, controlling environmental factors contributing to asthma (e.g. tobacco smoke), optimizing pharmacological treatment, and empowering people with asthma by educating them about the disease and providing individualized written action plans.
