Northwest Family Center logo The Northwest Family Center is dedicated to serving HIV infected women, children, adolescents and their families. The goal of the center is to assist families to function at the healthiest levels possible by providing coordinated medical care, medical case management and support services. The Center is located at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Washington State Ryan White Part D Network
The Northwest Family Center is the lead agency for the Washington State Ryan White Part D Network a Ryan White Part D funded collaboration. This collaboration provides and assures access to quality medical care and support services designed to optimize the health and quality of life of women, children, youth and families living with HIV disease in Washington State. The Network includes programs in King, Pierce, Whatcom, Skagit, Yakima, and Spokane Counties.

Services at the Northwest Family Center

Services include:

  • medical case management
  • chemical dependency counseling and access to treatment
  • access to mental health counseling and medications in the communit
  • assistance with transportation, shelter and food
  • access to research opportunities

Services for HIV infected pregnant women and their infants are provided in collaboration with the University of Washington and Children's Hospital and Medical Center. During weekly visits, women receive regular pre-natal and post-partum care, nutrition counseling and HIV care and medications. Infants are provided with well-child care, immunizations, post-exposure prophylaxis and HIV testing. From 1994 to the present, no positive babies were born to any infected pregnant women followed at the clinic.

Medical services for adults and adolescents are provided at Harborview Medical Center in collaboration with Madison Clinic and Children's Hospital and Medical Center. Services include primary/HIV medical care; specialty care in neurology, dermatology, hematology-oncology and podiatry; IV and respiratory therapy care, a specialized pharmacy and access to AIDS clinical research trials.

Medical services for HIV infected infants and children are provided at Children's Hospital and Medical Center.

Getting there

Harborview Medical Center is located on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Jefferson Street in Seattle.

  • Take the James Street exit off I-5 in the downtown area of Seattle.
  • Turn up the hill (east) on James Street and go to 9th Avenue.
  • Turn right (south) on Ninth Avenue and go one block.

By Bus:
Metro provides regular bur service to Harborview on several routes, including routes 3, 4, and 60. Routes 3 and 4 run along 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle. Route 60 runs along Broadway on Capitol Hill. Click here for the Metro Bus timetable.

Patient Parking:
Patient/visitor parking is available in the View Park Garage located at the West side of Harborview Medical Center on Alder Street. Patients and patient visitors can park on Levels A, 1, 2 and 3 of the View Park Garage. The garage is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Parking for People with Special Needs:
If you or a family member has a disability that restricts mobility, Harborview Medical Center staff is happy to help you access the medical center. Curbside-attendant parking service is available for patients and visitors with disabilities at the West Entrance on Eighth Avenue. Once you arrive at Harborview the easiest way to find the Northwest Family Center administrative offices, case management offices and child care is to enter through the East Clinic Entrance located at the south end of the facility on Ninth Avenue.

  • Take the elevators up one floor to the 1st Floor
  • Exit the elevators and turn right
  • Follow the corridor to Northwest Family Center

Directions from Northwest Family Center Offices to Northwest Family Center Clinic:

  • Proceed down the hallway from Northwest Family Center heading toward the 9th Avenue Entrance.
  • At the Ninth Ave Entrance, turn left and walk down the hallway to the Grand Staircase.
  • Walk beside, not down, the staircase through the doors to the West Clinic elevators.
  • Take the West Clinic Elevators to the 2nd Floor.
  • Northwest Family Center Clinic Check-in is at the first desk in the waiting area.

Partners of the Northwest Family Center Network

  • The BABES Network provides one-on-one peer support and groups, advocacy, education, and outreach.

  • Care Bearers group is composed of volunteers who provide assistance to persons who are HIV/AIDS positive and need help with various chores or responsibilities including housing and spiritual support, and advocacy for these services.

  • Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center provides medical care for HIV infected children and adolescents and conducts clinical HIV/AIDS research.

  • The Evergreen AIDS Foundation provides case management and support services for women living with HIV in Whatcom and Skagit Counties and has a prevention program.

  • Harborview Medical Center is a major regional health care facility for the Pacific Northwest which emphases HIV/AIDS care. The Madison Clinic provides HIV/AIDS medical, nursing care and social work services, trains health-care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection, and facilitates clinical research.

  • Pierce County AIDS Foundation provides case management, housing, mental health and chemical dependency services for HIV infected individuals and has AIDS prevention programs.

  • Spokane AIDS Network is a community based, non-profit agency dedicated to minimizing the impact of, and maximizing awareness about, AIDS and other consequences of HIV infection on communities and individuals in the inland Northwest.

  • YouthCare serves youth that are experiencing the consequences of homelessness, conflict, and disenfranchisement in King County. They provide HIV testing and counseling for adolescents and case management for HIV infected youth ages 13 to 24.

  • AIDS Alliance for Children, Youth & Families is the leading advocate for children, youth and families affected by HIV/AIDS. In addition to policy and advocacy work, they provide training and a voice for consumers.

  • National Pediatric & Family HIV Resource Center provides consultation, technical assistance and training for professionals caring for children, adolescents and families affected by HIV and produces a variety of family educational materials.
