JOHN SNOW NAMED TO NOAA SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD

John T. Snow, professor of meteorology and dean, College of Geosciences, The University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla., has been named to the Science Advisory Board of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA is an environmental research and service agency of the Commerce Department.

“We welcome Dr. Snow to the board and look forward to his contributions,” said Michael Uhart, executive director of the advisory board. “His experience and interest in the atmospheric sciences will serve NOAA well and we are very pleased that he agreed to serve on the Science Advisory Board.”

The board next meets Nov. 5-7 in Norman.

NOAA’s Science Advisory Board advises the NOAA administrator and leadership on long- and short-range strategies for research, education and the application of science to resource management and environmental assessment and prediction.

The 15-member advisory board, composed of eminent scientists, engineers, resource managers, and educators, assists NOAA in maintaining a complete and accurate understanding of scientific issues critical to the agency's missions.

Members are appointed by retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator to serve a three-year term.

Snow is one of four new board members named. The others are: David Blaskovich of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Richard T. Rosen of Lexington, Mass.; and Robert B. Gagosian of Woods Hole, Mass.

Snow’s current professional interest is the integration of the best available knowledge of earth and life sciences to provide a picture of how the world works. His primary research is in the dynamics of columnar vortices, ranging from dust devils to tornadoes. Meteorological measurements is his secondary field of research.

He is the incoming chairman of the NEXRAD Technical Advisory Committee. Snow has served on many boards and committees, including the board of trustees of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, the Board for Oceans and Atmosphere of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and past commissioner for education and human resources of the American Meteorological Society.

He is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the Royal Meteorological Society. Snow is a member of the board of Weather Decision Technologies, Inc., which commercializes intellectual property developed in the Oklahoma Weather Center. Among the many meetings he has organized is the first International Conference on European Severe Weather in Toulouse, France in February 2000.

Snow, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Rose Polytechnic Institute and a doctorate from Purdue University, is a retired officer of the United States Army Reserve.
