NOAA SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD TO REVIEW SCIENCE AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Science Advisory Board will meet Nov. 5-7 in Norman, Okla. to review several NOAA science and research programs. NOAA is an agency of the Commerce Department.

The 15-member panel is composed of scientists, educators, resource managers, and engineers. The board is charged with advising retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator, on long- and short-range strategies for research, education, and the application of science as well as resource management and environmental assessment and prediction. Lautenbacher will be attending some of the public sessions.

“The Science Advisory Board, through its review of NOAA labs and programs, provides valuable advice to NOAA on the air, oceans and earth research. The guidance helps the agency maintain a critical focus on the science that supports and protects our valuable resources and improves the forecasting of weather and climate research to insure the welfare and safety of all our citizens,” said Dr. Michael Uhart, Science Advisory Board executive director.

In addition to completing the reviews of labs and programs, the board will also discuss the Climate Change Research Initiative and hear presentations about NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory and the Cooperative Institute of Mesoscale Meteorological Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Board members will tour the NOAA Weather Partners, the five NOAA organizations located in Norman: National Severe Storms Laboratory, Storm Prediction Center, National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office, Radar Operations Center and Warning Decision Training Branch.

Open to the public, the meeting will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Oklahoma College of Continuing Education Forum Building, 1700 Asp Ave., and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 6 and 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 7 at the U.S.P.S. National Center for Employee Development Training and Conference Center, Rooms D and E, 2805 Highway 9 East. The public can present brief written or oral statements on Nov. 5 and Nov. 7.
