DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE AWARDS BRONZE MEDAL TO
KANSAS CITY WEATHER FORECAST OFFICE

The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded its Bronze Medal to NOAA National Weather Service Kansas City Weather Forecast Office for outstanding public service during the devastating ice storm of January 29-31, 2002. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is an agency of the Commerce Department.

Retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator presented the award to the office’s meteorologist in charge Lynn P. Maximuk during the ceremony today at the University of Maryland in Adelphi, Md.

The weather forecast office, located in Pleasant Hill, was commended for early forecasts and warnings that allowed emergency officials and residents of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri to prepare for the approaching storm. The award citation noted that forecast office staff members “placed service above self” to overcome personal emergencies at home so they could report to work.

The Bronze Medal is the third highest award presented annually by the Department of Commerce in recognition of employees, groups and offices that have made significant contributions to the public.
