FOR MAINE MARINE EDUCATION CENTER DEVELOPMENT The Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has recognized Phyllis Wyeth as an Environmental Hero for 2002. Wyeth is one of several environmental heroes selected by NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service to receive this year's award. Wyeth is being recognized for her work encouraging local children's involvement in marine science. Wyeth developed and supports the Herring Gut Learning Center in Port Clyde Harbor in Maine. This field based marine education center was created to promote marine science, technology and research by bringing science education and its real world application together. "Phyllis's dedication and endless efforts to develop and improve the Herring Gut Learning Center thrusts her into the forefront for this worthy award," said Bill Hogarth, assistant administrator for NOAA Fisheries. "Her hard work and dedication helps NOAA Fisheries fulfill its mission, and helps ensure that future generations learn about our country's incredible marine environments." The Herring Gut Learning Center is currently in the process of expanding its facilities to meet the increasing needs of the community. Ground has been broken to more than double the size of the facility. The extra room will allow for 30 more students. Established in 1995 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual Environmental Hero Award is presented to individuals and organizations that volunteer their time and energy to help NOAA accomplish its mission to protect and preserve our Nation's environment. There are a total of 31 honorees this year. NOAA's National Marine Fisheries
