Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere Terry Garcia issued this statement regarding the California Legislature vote approving the acquisition of the Headwaters old-growth redwoods in northern California:

"I'm pleased to see such a strong commitment from California toward protection of threatened coho salmon. California lawmakers and the Pacific Lumber Company have set the stage for the protection of stream-side habitat in order for salmon to survive and prosper in the Headwaters region. The effort to set aside these forests and protect salmon habitats will help to ensure the recovery of these important species. This agreement is a major step forward in the conservation of anadromous fish on private land. In short, the bill is good for salmon, people and commerce in northern California."
