NOAA AWARDS CONTRACT FOR HURRICANE JET MODIFICATIONS TO AEROMET INC. OF TULSA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded a $920,394 contract to Aeromet Inc. of Tulsa, Okla., for modifications and engineering services that will expand the capabilities of NOAA's Gulfstream IV jet. The jet is used primarily to improve meteorological forecasts.

Aeromet was a subcontractor to E-Systems during the initial outfitting of the jet, and was responsible for the pressure, temperature and humidity sensors; the dropwindsonde launcher; and the instrument racks.

All Aeromet modifications will be FAA-certified. The contract, awarded Sept. 30, includes:

Top/bottom pods with general purpose instrument ports: These upward and downward-looking instruments ports are expected to offer more capability and flexibility at less cost, and cause far fewer maintenance problems.

Window frame mounted-general purpose instrument ports (right and left side): Each port will replace, and be interchangeable with, an existing aircraft window.

Engineering study: Aeromet will develop preliminary designs for the airframe modifications necessary to install both a Vertically Scanning Doppler Radar and a Step Frequency Microwave Radiometer on the jet, including cost estimates, engineering analyses, and assessment of the effects on aircraft performance.

Aeromet is a woman-owned small disadvantaged business, and has been certified as an 8(a) Native American company.
