NOAA LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR NEW TROPICAL PREDICTION CENTER DIRECTOR

NOAA today launched a nationwide search for a new director of its Tropical Prediction Center in Miami, Florida.

“The director of the Tropical Prediction Center is one of the most visible and important positions within the federal government,” said retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr., Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “We are seeking qualified applicants from all sectors of the meteorological and scientific community.”

The Tropical Prediction Center is part of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction of NOAA’s National Weather Service. The Tropical Prediction Center includes the National Hurricane Center, which provides forecasts of the movement and strength of tropical weather systems and issues watches and warnings for the U.S. coastal and surrounding areas. The Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch provides support for satellite and radar analyses, and the Technical Support Branch supports the Center’s computer and communications systems while developing new techniques for tropical cyclone and tropical weather analysis and prediction.

“The person who will serve in this position must wear many hats…as leader of a team of professionals who have dedicated their lives to protecting us from tropical cyclone hazards; as a scientist working with the research community to enhance the nation’s hurricane program; as a consultant to local, county, state and federal officials charged with protecting our residents and visitors; and as a trusted spokesperson to the nation when the threat is imminent,” Lautenbacher said. “It is among the most demanding of positions, but also the most rewarding.”

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply before the announcement closes on October 24, 2007. The annual salary range for the position is $111,676 to $168,000, commensurate with experience, and offers a broad array of benefits, including health, life, retirement, long-term care, and flexible spend plans, just to name a few.

Complete applications packages must include a resume and submission of executive core and professional qualifications statements included in the announcement found on http://www.careers.noaa.gov. Interested candidates may contact Ms. Norma Hughes on 301-713-6307 or at Norma.J.Hughes@noaa.gov if they have any questions regarding this job announcement or the application process.

NOAA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through the prediction and research of weather and climate-related events and providing environmental stewardship of the nation's coastal and marine resources. Through the emerging Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), NOAA is working with its federal partners, more than 70 countries and the European Commission to develop a global network that is as integrated as the planet it observes, predicts and protects.
