Thick Target Resonances

Proton resonance reactions using heavy ion beams has been studied with an 17O beam on polypropylene and ZrH targets. Resonances were studied at bombarding energies of 14 and 20 MeV of 17O. Low beam intensities of the order of 10^7 ions/s have been used to avoid hydrogen loss due to damage by the heavy ion beams. The targets are thick enough to stop the heavy ion beams, but thin enough to let the recoil light particles escape the target. A large solid angle (180 msr) micro strip detector was used to register protons and alphas and high quality excitation functions can be obtained in a single exposure of about 30 minutes.

Here is a typical excitation function obtained in our recent experiment.

This technique can be very valuable for studies with radioactive beams and will be tested with 17F beams of HRIBF.
