New Zealand - Summary of Requirements

The following protocols for exporting animals to New Zealand are links to the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. By selecting these links you will be leaving the APHIS website. The Animal and Animal Products home page can be found at: http://www.maf.govt.nz/biosecurity/imports/animals/.

SPECIES - MOST RECENT UPDATE

Cattle

Horses

New Zealand is temporarily placing additional testing requirements for equine influenza on horses imported from the United States (and other countries). All horses exported to New Zealand must now have a PCR test or antigen ELISA test for equine influenza 10-14 days into pre-export quarantine. The horses will also be tested via PCR 5-7 days into post-arrival quarantine.

Poultry

Porcine (semen) - Refer to MAF website

Pets

Laboratory Animals - Refer to MAF laboratory animals website

Ruminants (zoological) - April 1989 (pdf 7kb)

Ostrich/emus eggs - March 1996 (pdf 46kb)

For species not listed, the requirements are not known. However, exporters wanting to ship livestock or germplasm whose requirements are not listed in the IRRS, should have the interested party (importer/buyer) in the country of destination apply for an Import Permit at the appropriate ministry. This Import Permit will most likely outline the specific requirements.
