MMR vaccine: Two comprehensive reviews conclude that it does not cause autism or inflammatory bowel disease.
I.H.S. Natl. Meeting: May 10-12 conference in Phoenix drew over 80 participants. Ken Fleshman, MD, FAAP honored.
Conjugate Pneumococcal Vaccine: Recently shown to be extremely effective in high-risk Native American communities.
Obesity: Public health approaches need to focus on breast feeding promotion, control of television time, and avoiding parental attempts to control what their children eat.
Literacy promotion: Can have positive impacts on reading by parents and subsequent development of children's language skills.
Adolescent diabetes: Teen-centered approach necessary to effectively treat those with Type 2.
RPMS Immunization package: Version 7.1 now released.
Fluoride: Pediatricians in Navajo receive training to apply fluoride varnishes in well-child clinics.
Kernicterus: Can rarely occur in otherwise healthy breast fed infants; can be prevented by continued vigilance and available therapies.
PALS and Adult Life Support: New guidelines will be part of courses starting in July.
CONACH: Will visit Navajo Area this fall.
Indian Health Special Interest Group: Pediatricians urged to join.
