Nottingham Staffers Enjoy Food and Music at Imperial Live at Lunch

By Eddy Ball
June 2008

Each spring, landlords at the Imperial Center in RTP throw a lunchtime party for the people who populate their buildings. The event combines food and drink from a major fast food vendor with music, fellowship and displays by vendors. As a public service, this year’s Live at Lunch also featured a raffle, with proceeds going to help the North Carolina Food Bank.

Lunch at the Imperial Center May 14 gave NIEHS staff an opportunity to mingle with their Imperial Center neighbors and enjoy a respite outside on an especially pleasant spring day.

Long lines were no deterrent for folks eager to put lunch on their landlords’ tab. Luckily for these folks, the line moved quickly and there was plenty for second — and third — helpings.

The band, Café Mars, served up credible covers of 1980s hits, ranging from disco greats to the jazzy rock of Steely Dan. Lead male vocal and trumpet player Steve Baker cut loose as Charlotte Gregory awaits the cue for her vocals provided by drummer Todd Proctor and bassist Ben Palmer.

Some visitors chose to spend their Live at Lunch a little farther from the band’s loud speakers eating at tables in the vendor tent, while others browsed and picked up free gifts and samples.

Sound man Jerry Keen, looking as though he’s heard the song many times before, still did a commendable job of balancing the contributions of each band member.
