If you send a check to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, it will be converted into an electronic funds transfer (EFT). This means we will copy your check and use the account information on it to electronically debit your account for the amount of the check. The debit from your account will usually occur within 24 hours, and will be shown on your regular account statement. You will not receive your original check back. We will destroy your original check, but we will keep the copy of it. If the EFT cannot be processed for technical reasons, you authorize us to process the copy in place of your original check. If the EFT cannot be completed because of insufficient funds, we may try to make the transfer up to 2 times. |

Department of Treasury Privacy Act Statement
Sections 321 and 3301, title 31, United States Code, authorize the Department of Treasury to collection information from the paper check presented by you. The information will be used for the primary purpose of converting the check to an electronic funds transfer. The information will also be used to obtain information on your payment and check writing history to establish whether your check will be accepted.
Disclosures of collected information may be made to: government agencies for law enforcement purposes; commercial database vendors for law enforcement, authentication, and check writing history; courts and tribunals for litigation or settlement purposes or in response to a subpoena; a congressional office; federal agencies, agents, financial institutions and contractors for payment processing, reconciliation, and debt collection; and credit bureaus and employers for debt collection. Furnishing the information on the check is voluntary, but a decision not to do so may require you to make payment by some other method.
