This is one of many types of temporary shelters that were built. This particular design was the source of some debate due to the fact that villagers preferred them and they were cheaper to build, but they were highly flammable and presented a fire hazard that could rapidly envelop an entire village.Image Credit:Havidan Rodriguez,University of Delaware, Disaster Relief Center

Triton Hotel, Sri Lanka

View of the swimming pool at the Triton Hotel Sri Lanka at 09:36 local time on 26 Dec 2004. The hotel is right on the beach (to the upper-left of the photo). A small wave had rolled over the swimming pool at about 09:30 bringing a lot of sand with it (height above normal sea level about 2m), but doing no damage. The clock in the camera was not accurately set, so the absolute times of all these photos have been estimated by shifting to a few points when I noted the time. The relative times will be very accurate. Photos Provided By: Chris Chapman, Schlumberger Cambridge Research, Cambridge, U.K
