Standard Operating Procedure Table of Contents

Purpose To request Council approval
for potential future initiatives -- RFAs, PAs,
or RFPs --
through which NIAID sets aside money to stimulate research in high-priority
areas.
Procedure
Every initiative must go through concept
clearance. NIAID publishes Concepts
cleared at recent Council meetings on the Funding Web site. Not
every concept cleared by Council becomes a published initiative.

Investigators
Program Officers
- Develop research concepts.
- Consider co-sponsorship when developing a concept. For more information
see Co-Sponsorship of RFAs and PAs SOP.
- Enter concepts into the Scientific Initiatives Management System
(SIMS).
- After concept clearance, enter Council recommendations and comments
into the concept clearance forms in the Council concept section of
SIMS.
NIAID Management
- Division managers rank the concepts.
- NIAID director and executive committee select concepts for clearance.
Council Members
- Review concepts and make recommendations.
Division of Extramural Activities Staff
- Work with program staff to schedule developing concepts into
an RFA, PA, or RFP.
- Review initiatives for final approval.
