Topographic image of the United States U.S. State Images from 30 Second Topographic Data (3rd Edition June, 1999)

Images created from topography data enhance our view of many physiographic features, especially in relatively flat areas. The Atlantic Seaboard and Gulf Coasts, for example, have enhanced views of coastal and other relief features. NGDC also has a Gallery of GLOBE images showing the whole world, continents, and selected regions at high resolution.

Topographic data are valuable for many applications. Examples include modeling climate, water runoff, minimum safe aircraft flight altitudes, and vacation planning. Even when not used directly in a study, topographic data are often used in preparing visualization tools.
