Purpose To provide
grant funding to at least two related research projects.
Procedure
Applicants may apply for a multiproject application in one of two ways:
Note that applications responding to RFAs are solicited while those responding to program announcements (PA) are investigator-initiated (unsolicted). This distinction matters for multiple PI applications as described in the Instructions for Preparing a Multiproject Grant Application.
NIAID accepts investigator-initiated multiproject applications for
P01s only.
For a P50 or U19, you may
apply only in response to an RFA or Institute-specific program announcement (PA).
As with all "big grants," investigators must get an NIAID program
officer's approval
before submitting an investigator-initiated application with direct costs of $500,000 or more in any year of the grant. This policy applies even if none of the individual projects requests $500,000 or more. See our Big Grants SOP for more information.
Investigators must also obtain program officer approval to resubmit an application.
Applicants
- For an investigator-initiated application, contact an NIAID program
officer when still in the planning stage in case NIAID rejects your
idea. NIAID must pre-approve your application before you apply, indicating
that we agreed to allow Center
for Scientific Review to
assign it here for possible funding.
- Include with your application cover letter a letter from an NIAID
program officer giving approval of your application for review and
funding consideration by the Institute. You must include this documentation
with your application.
- If responding to an RFA or PA, read it thoroughly for eligibility
conditions.
- Read Instructions for Preparing a Multiproject Grant Application for instructions.
